WANDERBACH page 213 (chapter 17)

Tork wipes the sweat off his forehead. Where did that come from? International matters usually don’t interest him that much but it seems that he was able to move the Goddesses. Will it work again on a higher level? For the moment he has Diana as passport.

While he follows he thinks about what he wanted to make clear. Never before he was a great speaker and his inspired argumentation surprises him. Out of necessity to break the divine lethargy? Is it correct what he stated? Are religious frictions the basis of such different conflicts?

It is true that the Western way of thinking is highly based upon Christian morality, the Arabic on the Islam and that Asians are influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism or derivatives of it. It is linked with eachother. And if this is so, is it surprising than that in today’s time, where believe in technique suppresses old values, people choose for weapons out of fear and to defend what they know? If you look at it that way these kind of troubles are mainly a defense of righteous heritage that’s about to disappear after too rapid changes. Technical development never went so fast. Isn’t it logic than that thanks to this, such matters are being ripped loose in stead of coming to surface quite gradual?

Diana interrupts his thinking when she reports that they are at the passage.

Tork doesn’t see anything. The high rising wall with above it the second level seems continuous but as soon as the Goddess lifts her hand a part glides aside and reveals a shiny container. 

Tork wist zich het zweet van het voorhoofd. Waar kwam dat allemaal vandaan? Wereldvraagstukken interesseren hem nauwelijks maar blijkbaar raakte hij een snaar bij de Godinnen. Of het hoger nogmaals lukt? Voorlopig heeft hij Diana als paspoort.

Terwijl hij volgt denkt hij na over wat hij duidelijk wilde maken. Nooit eerder was hij een groot spreker en zijn geïnspireerd betoog verbaast hem. Uit noodzaak om de Goddelijke lethargie te doorbreken? Klopt het wat hij beweerde? Liggen godsdienstige geschillen aan de basis van zo verschillende conflicten?

Het is waar dat de Westerse denkwijze in hoge mate wordt bepaald door de christelijke moraal, de Arabische door de islam en dat Aziaten beïnvloed zijn door het hindoeïsme en boeddhisme of afgeleiden daarvan. Het is met elkaar verweven. En als dat zo is, is het dan verwonderlijk dat in de huidige tijd, nu geloof in techniek oude waarden verdringt, mensen uit angst naar wapens grijpen om te verdedigen wat ze kennen? Zo gezien zijn dat soort strubbelingen vooral verdediging van rechtmatig erfgoed dat door te snelle veranderingen dreigt te verzuipen. Technische ontwikkeling ging nog nooit zo snel. Is het dan niet logisch dat dankzij deze stroomversnelling zaken worden losgescheurd die anders heel geleidelijk naar het oppervlak zouden drijven?

Diana doorbreekt zijn gepeins wanneer ze meldt dat ze bij de doorgang zijn.

Tork ziet niets. De hoog oprijzende wand met daarboven de tweede trede lijkt ononderbroken maar zodra de Godin haar hand ophoudt schuift een deel opzij en onthult een glimmende koker.
